Das Ergebnis der Unterteilung sind digitale Einzugsgebietsgrenzen und Fließgewässerabschnitte. Ergibt sich aus den vorhandenen Daten zunächst eine grobe Unterteilung, kann diese noch weiter unterteilt werden, insbesondere, wenn es aufgrund der Fragestellung wichtig ist, bestimmte Prozesse im Gewässer abzubilden, die mit der groben Unterteilung nicht mehr darstellbar sind. Im folgenden ist ein hoch aufgelöstes wasserwirtschaftliches System einem gering aufgelösten System gegenübergestellt:
